WASHINGTON DC - Fashion and textiles are named as the leading sources of microfibre pollution in a new draft report from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The report to US Congress says that the fashion and textiles industry - along with manufacturers of washing machines and tumble dryers - should design products to prevent microfibres from being released.

Clothes washing is identified as one major source of microfibres, because almost no residential washing machines in the US have filters to capture microfibres from entering wastewater systems.
